HUNTSVILLE – AL. It was grand time for all as the The Irish Society of North Alabama and Still Serving Veterans joined forces to present the Huntsville Irish Christmas and Whiskey Tasting event of the year! This fundraising event allows 100% of the proceeds to Still Serving Veterans (SSV) Careers or the Veterans program.
SSV is a Huntsville, Alabama-based Veterans’ service organization that empowers wounded warriors, Veterans, and their families to optimally transition into meaningful new careers and post-military lives with all the benefits and service that they have earned
SSV has helped over 5,000 Veterans and wounded warriors, securing over $43 million in additional salaries and benefits since 2007. In 2010, SSV conducted nearly 2,600 one-on-one counseling sessions, secured over $9.1 million for Veteran clients, and helped 71 Veteran get hired with an average annual salary of $50,214. Since October this year SSV has helped hire an additional 87 Veterans
Special dignitary, Paul Gleeson attended the event. We congratulate Gleeson in his position of Consul General of Ireland located in Atlanta, GA. Gleeson has executed his position quite well in the two years of his four year term
We enjoyed this special holiday evening with various local companies and families. The meal was incredible as we enjoyed it to delightful time as we listened to wonderful Irish music by The Whiskey River Kings whose own folk-rock unique style embraces traditional Irish folk music, Bob Dylan, Hogging Molly, Bourbon and Shamrocks, and Old Crow Medicine Show. They were amazing.
Bourbon & Shamrocks is a band founded on fun, music and good times. Most of the members have been jamming together for the last 10 to 15 years. They have a gig every week somewhere. They even have a CD call “Craic” meaning “Good Times” in Gaelic.
Irish Dancers were witnessed by all under the direction of Ms. Brandan Newman. She leads the Fitness Arts Center in the Huntsville/Madison area for the serious dancer or for those who simply want to take classes for recreational purposes. Her performing students are 7-17 years old.
The Rocket City Chorus was enchanting. This Chorus got its name by dating back 53 years of history back to the Von Braun Center, hence the name. This Barbershop’s unique four-part harmony singing is an indigenous art form to America which the Barbershop Harmony Society is enthusiastically spreading thought the world and the U.S. They belong to the International Barbershop Harmony Society based in Nashville, Tennessee.
Of course, it wouldn’t be Irish event without the bagpipes. The Ian Sturrock memorial Pipe Band is a performance and competition band based in Birmingham. Their name is in honor off Ian Sturrock, the first to teach bagpipes in the state of Alabama.
The night ended with a wonderful Irish Whiskey Tasting with Marty Connors, who is the Chairman of the Birmingham Irish Cultural Society. He was back in Huntsville with us during this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade as Grand Marshal.
Several local caterers and breweries sponsored the food and beer/wine so 100% proceeds go directly to serve our Veterans, wounded warriors and their families here in North Alabama
It’s a wonderful thing to know that our Veterans can be helped through your support. I give special thank you to Sheila McFerran who is the Director/Program Developer at SSV who plans these events. It’s a major undertaking. Also, I want to say thank you to Ret. Col. Will Webb, who is the President of SSV, and I offer a special gratitude to all the staff at SSV.
Your can hear interviews here, but because of the band, it's a bit hard to hear.
